Man facing 5 assault charges for strip club shooting incident

A 47-year-old man accused of pulling a pistol in a Lockwood strip club and then shooting a rifle toward sheriff’s deputies and others in the parking lot was charged Wednesday in Justice Court.

Douglas Gene McKinnon appeared by video from the county jail on five felony counts of assault with weapon. At the request of prosecutors, McKinnon’s bond was set at $20,000.

According to court records, McKinnon was arrested after deputies were called to Planet Lockwood shortly after 1:30 a.m. Monday.

Witnesses said McKinnon was in the strip club and was staring at another patron, a black man identified in court records only by his initials.

The man confronted McKinnon about his behavior, court records state, and the two men began to argue. During the argument, McKinnon pulled a handgun and pointed it at the man.

A bouncer, who was also black, intervened and persuaded McKinnon to leave the club. The bouncer followed McKinnon to a pickup truck and told him to leave the property, court records state.

McKinnon “was belligerent, but complied” with the request.

As McKinnon was preparing to leave, several patrons came outside and chastised McKinnon for resorting to a handgun, court records state.

“Who pulls out a pistol?” one person is reported to have said. “Why don’t you use your fists?”

McKinnon then allegedly pointed a rifle at the crowd, including the bouncer.

“It’s not a pistol, it’s a rifle,” McKinnon responded, court records state. “Bang, bang bang, dead monkeys.”

McKinnon drove out of the lot, and the bouncer said that as he and others were returning inside they heard a gunshot come from the direction that McKinnon had left.

Two sheriff’s deputies arrived and were talking to people about the incident when a second shot was fired. The deputies said the bullet passed over their heads.

Other officers were called to the scene and McKinnon was found in his truck parked in a field about 100 yards from the strip club. McKinnon was arrested, and a semi-automatic pistol, ammunition and a scoped rifle were later found in the truck.

McKinnon is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in District Court.
