The strip club effect
It’s a quiet Thursday night in St. Andrews, just past 11 o’clock. Shrimp Boat, the high-class, three-story restaurant modeled after an 1800s Cuban cigar factory, is closed — but Frank Sinatra still plays over the loudspeaker on the front patio.
Across the street from Shrimp Boat, just a bra’s toss from the fountain, an “OPEN” sign blinks. The chefs at Shrimp Boat are done serving sushi and prime rib for the night, but the dancers at Tan Fannies are just getting started. Whether an adult club is offensive depends on personal taste, but whether it will cause a crime surge is an issue researchers have studied for years.
